Where is Pileh Lagoon, and how does it differ from Maya Bay?
Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay are on the same island, Phi Phi Leh, but on different sides — and they offer opposite experiences.

Phi Phi Leh has no accommodation

How to get to Pileh Lagoon
There is no scheduled public boat to Phi Phi Leh. You go on a trip or charter.
From mainland Krabi or Ao Nang
- Speedboat takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour to reach Phi Phi Leh
- It is a full-day trip once you count travel both ways
- Trips usually run Maya Bay, then Pileh Lagoon, then Viking Cave, then on to snorkelling at Phi Phi Don
From Phi Phi Don
- Much closer, roughly 15 to 20 minutes
- Half-day trips and longtail charters both available
- Best if you are already staying overnight on Phi Phi Don, since you can take the quiet early slot
Charter or group trip?
Group trips cost less but arrive at the same time as every other boat on the same schedule. Chartering lets you choose your departure — which matters at Pileh, because mid-morning to midday the boats pack into that small bay.
Can you swim in Pileh Lagoon?
Yes, with conditions
- You can float and swim inside the bay. The still water makes it easier than an open-sea stop.
- You must wear a life jacket as your operator requires — the water is deeper than it looks.
- You enter straight from the boat; there is no beach to stand on.
The rules that matter
- No going ashore or climbing the cliffs — it is a park area and the limestone is brittle
- No feeding the fish — it changes their behaviour and fouls the water
- Do not stand on coral — there is coral close to the surface around the edges
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a long-sleeved sun top instead

Park fees
Phi Phi Leh is inside a national park, with a per-person entry fee. Thai and foreign rates differ and there is a separate child rate. Ask your operator clearly whether the trip price includes the park fee, since many charge it separately.
When is Pileh Lagoon quietest and clearest?
The bay is small and every boat comes through the same gap, so your arrival time changes the whole experience.
Early morning
The best slot. Boats from mainland Krabi have not arrived yet. The people who get this window are usually staying on Phi Phi Don or have chartered an early departure. The water is at its stillest and clearest, before propellers stir up sediment.
Mid-morning to midday
The busiest window. Dozens of boats arrive together because they all left the mainland at similar times. Expect other boats in nearly every photo.
Late afternoon
Thinner, as full-day trips start heading back — but the light is low and the water colour is less vivid than in the morning.
Season

What to bring to Pileh Lagoon
- Swimwear worn underneath — you enter the water straight from the boat and there are no changing facilities
- A light long-sleeved sun top — works instead of sunscreen and is better for the coral
- A dry bag for your phone, since you go from boat to water directly
- Motion sickness tablets — the open-water crossing from mainland Krabi is rougher than people expect
- Cash for the park fee if your trip excludes it
- Drinking water — there are no shops in the bay
You do not need beach shoes here, since there is no landing.
