Krabi Airport to Ao Nang: your options

The airport bus

• Runs the airport to Krabi town and Ao Nang route, stopping at set points
• The cheapest of all the options
• Departs on a timetable — you may wait after landing, and the last service does not cover every late flight
• Best for one or two travellers with light luggage and no rush

Shared minivan

• Fills up with several parties before departing, so there is a wait
• Cheaper per person than a private car, more than the bus
• Drops you at your accommodation if it is on the route
• Best if you can accept 15 to 30 minutes of waiting

Taxi or car from the airport counter

• Leaves immediately, no waiting to fill seats
• Costs more than a shared minivan, usually a flat rate per vehicle by distance
• Best for groups of three or four, where the per-person cost lands near the minivan rate

Private transfer booked in advance

• The driver waits at arrivals with a name board, no haggling on the spot
• You know the price before you fly
• You can send it to your hotel or straight to a pier
• Best for late arrivals, small children, or heavy luggage

Krabi Airport to Railay: how it works

Railay is a peninsula with limestone mountains blocking land access. Everyone arrives by boat. Two stages.

Stage one: airport to pier

• Choose the pier that matches the beach you are staying on — different piers serve different beaches
• Ao Nam Mao pier serves East Railay and gives the shortest boat ride
• Ao Nang pier serves West Railay and Tonsai
• Tell your driver which pier, not just "Railay"

Stage two: pier to Railay

• From Ao Nam Mao, roughly 10 to 15 minutes by boat
• From Ao Nang, roughly 15 to 20 minutes
• Longtail boats for hire leave once they have enough passengers, or you pay to charter if you would rather not wait

Total journey

Roughly one to one and a half hours from airport to your Railay beach, including the wait for a boat. Allow more with large luggage — you load it yourself, and longtails beach directly on the sand at some tide levels.

Landing late — can you still get to Railay?

This is the most common problem, and it cannot be solved on the day.

Boats to Railay have a last run

• Scheduled shuttle boats finish in the early evening
• Longtail boats for hire run later, but stop once it is dark, because beaching at night is not safe
• Sailing after dark means chartering and arranging it in advance, at a higher price, and it is not possible every day

What actually works

• Landing before late afternoon — you can continue to Railay the same day comfortably
• Landing early evening — book a charter in advance and give them your flight time, or accept you may not make it
• Landing late — spend one night in Ao Nang or Krabi town and cross to Railay the next morning. Cheaper and no risk.

Booking that first night on the mainland and moving to Railay the following day is what frequent travellers do. It is not a wasted day.

• Carry cash — longtail fares and some shops take nothing else
• Name your beach clearly — Railay has several beaches; give the driver your hotel and beach from the start

• Check the season — during monsoon some boat routes stop when the swell is up. Have a plan for which side you would sleep on.
