Hong Island Krabi: How to Time It So You Get Inside the Lagoon

Where is Hong Island, and why the name?
Hong Island sits in the Mu Ko Hong group, north of Ao Nang, inside Than Bok Khorani National Park in Krabi province. There is no accommodation and no village, so it is a day-trip island only.

What else is in the Mu Ko Hong group?
Trips to Hong Island usually stop at the smaller islands in the same group, since they sit less than ten minutes apart.
- Hong Island — the main island, with the lagoon and the white sand beach
- Koh Lading — a small island with a narrow beach hemmed in by tall cliffs, a popular photo stop
- Koh Pelay / Koh Phak Bia — snorkelling spots with coral close to the surface
Getting several islands in one outing is why a Hong Island trip still works well even as a half day.
How to get to Hong Island
There is no scheduled public boat to Hong Island. You go on a trip or charter a boat. The main departure points are Ao Nang and Ao Nam Mao pier.
Speedboat
Roughly 30 to 40 minutes from shore. Best if your time is short or you want several stops within a half day.
- You arrive faster, so you get more time on the island itself.
- The hull slaps harder through chop — if you get seasick, sit mid-boat.
- Speedboat trips usually fit three or four stops into a half day.
Longtail boat
About an hour. Best if you are not in a hurry and want the local-boat feel.
- Slower, but steadier than a speedboat when the swell is small.
- Gets closer in to cliffs and small bays.
- Good for small groups or families chartering the whole boat.

Charter or join a group trip?
Group trips cost less but run on the group's clock. Chartering lets you choose your departure time — which matters a great deal at Hong Island, because getting into the lagoon depends on the tide that day.
When can you get into the Hong Island lagoon?
This is the detail that disappoints most first-time visitors who did not know about it.
The entrance depends on the tide
The gap into the lagoon is narrow and shallow. Boats can only pass through when the water is high enough.
- At high tide — small boats or longtails slip inside. The water is still and clear green.
- At low tide — the channel is too shallow and boats cannot enter. You either look in from outside or paddle a kayak through.
Which means timing your departure to the tide matters more than which day you go. On a group trip you take whatever time the trip runs; chartering lets you pick.
What you can do inside
- Float or swim in still water, since no swell reaches inside
- Paddle a kayak around the lagoon and see the cliffs from within
- Photograph from the middle, where the walls encircle you completely
Do not stand on or touch anything near the surface at the edges — the lagoon is a nursery habitat for young marine life.
How do Hong Island park fees work?
Hong Island is inside a national park, so there is a park fee separate from your trip price.
- Thai and foreign visitors pay different rates, and there is a separate child rate.
- The fee is per person per entry and is not included in every operator's price.
- Rates change periodically. Ask your operator clearly whether the park fee is included before you book.
A trip priced far below the market usually excludes the park fee and collects it on the day. Ask for the number before you pay.
Park closures
Andaman national parks close for recovery periods during monsoon in some years. Before planning, check that Hong Island is open for your dates — local operators know in advance.
Half day or full day at Hong Island?
Both exist. Pick based on your time and what you want out of it.
Half day
Morning or afternoon departure, roughly three to four hours including travel.
- Around three stops: the lagoon, the Hong Island beach, and one snorkelling spot
- Good if your time in Krabi is short, or you want the other half day free
- The morning run has fewer people and usually clearer water
Full day
Roughly six to seven hours, with lunch on the island or on the boat.
- Covers the whole Mu Ko Hong group with longer inside the lagoon
- Real time to swim and lie on the beach without rushing
- Better for families and first-time visitors who want to see it all
Compared with the 4 Islands tour
The 4 Islands tour and the Hong Island trip run in opposite directions. The 4 Islands route heads west of Ao Nang and features a sandbar you can walk at low tide; Hong Island heads north and the lagoon is the draw. When is the water clearest, and what should you bring?
The best window
November through April brings the clearest water and calmest sea. Boats run daily and the lagoon is accessible on the tide. Late December through February is busiest — take a morning slot.
May to October is monsoon: bigger swell and some cancelled days. Keep a spare day and check the park is open.
What to bring
- Swimwear worn underneath — changing facilities on the island are limited
- Closed-heel shoes that can get wet — parts of the beach have rock and shell
- Reef-safe sunscreen, since the snorkelling coral sits close to the surface
- Hat and a light long-sleeved top — there is no shade on the boat
- Cash for the park fee and the stalls on the island
- A dry bag for your phone, since you transfer to a small boat to enter the lagoon
There is no convenience store on the island. Bring enough drinking water.
