What Is Railay? White Sand Beaches Loved by Travelers Worldwide

21/05/26 - blog

Railay is a peninsula in Krabi province, 20 kilometers from town. You can only get there by boat. Tall limestone cliffs block all roads. It has 4 main beaches, beach bars that stay open until midnight, world-class rock climbing routes, and luxury hotels from 3,500 to 15,000 baht per night. This guide covers everything: the geography, each beach, things to do, where to stay, and the best months to visit.

Is Railay an Island or What Exactly?

Railay is not an island. It's a peninsula. It connects to the Krabi mainland on the west side. Picture a finger sticking out into the Andaman Sea. It covers about 2 square kilometers. Tall limestone cliffs (200 to 300 meters high) wrap around it and block every road from town.

The only way in is by boat. From Ao Nang Pier, a longtail boat takes 15 to 20 minutes for 100 to 150 baht. Or take a shuttle boat from Ao Nam Mao Pier for 10 to 15 minutes and 150 baht. Read our Ao Nam Mao to Railay shuttle boat guide for the full schedule and prices.

The name "Railay" comes from a Malay word meaning "land of rice paddies." Local fishermen who've lived here for 200 years say their ancestors grew rice in what are now hotels and restaurants. The name stuck.

The 4 Beaches at Railay: How Are They Different?

Railay has 4 beaches along the peninsula: Railay East, Railay West, Phra Nang Cave Beach, and Tonsai Beach. Each one has its own feel.

Railay East

The east-facing beach holds the main pier where all the boats dock. This is also where most hotels, restaurants, and bars are. About 30 to 40 restaurants, 10 to 15 bars, and foot massage shops for 250 to 350 baht per hour.

The beach itself is sand mixed with mud at low tide. Not great for swimming. But it's perfect for walking and eating beside the water at sunrise (5:30 to 6:30 a.m.). The orange-red sky reflects in the water and looks amazing.

Railay West

The best swimming beach in Railay. Fine white sand 800 meters long. Shallow water from 0.5 to 1.5 meters deep. You can see small fish swimming. The 4 and 5-star hotels line the beach. About 10 to 15 cats live in the middle of the beach with the tourists.

The best photo spot is at the south end of the beach. You can see limestone cliffs in the background and longtail boats parked in the water. Go at golden hour (5:30 to 6:30 p.m.) when the orange-red sky reflects in the water.

Phra Nang Cave Beach

The prettiest beach in Railay, according to foreign travelers. It made the top 25 most beautiful beaches in the world on Tripadvisor in 2024. Cream-white sand and clear emerald water. At the end of the beach, there's a cave dedicated to a goddess called Phra Nang, with wooden carvings that fishermen brought as offerings.

The beach has a wooden boat-bar that sells cocktails and fruit juice on a floating boat. Drinks cost 180 to 280 baht each. Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's a top check-in spot for travelers on social media.

You can only reach this beach by walking from Railay East (10 minutes through a forest path along limestone cliffs), or by longtail boat from Ao Nang in 15 minutes for 150 to 200 baht.

Tonsai Beach

The quietest beach in Railay. It's on the north side of the peninsula. Rock climbers stay here because it's close to the climbing cliffs. Cheap bungalows from 800 to 1,500 baht per night, unlike the luxury hotels on the other beaches.

The beach is sand mixed with mud. Not great for swimming. But it's great for watching climbers on the cliffs, drinking beer at bars that stay open all night, and meeting travelers from all over the world.

Why Visit Railay? Things You Can't Miss

Railay is one of the top destinations for adventurers and couples who want a nature trip. It mixes mountains, sea, and local culture in one place.

Rock Climbing

Railay is the most famous rock climbing spot in Southeast Asia. There are 12 main cliffs with over 700 routes ranging from level 4 to 8c+. From beginner to pro. 5 to 7 climbing schools offer beginner courses for 1,200 to 1,800 baht per half-day, including gear and instructor.

Kayaking

Kayak rental costs 200 to 300 baht per hour, or 600 to 900 baht per day. You can paddle into boat caves, mangrove forests, and small islands near Railay. A 2 to 3 hour paddle is enough.

Snorkeling

In front of Railay West Beach, there's shallow coral at 1 to 2 meters deep. Rent a snorkel mask in the area for 150 to 200 baht per day. You'll see table coral, butterfly fish, and clownfish.

Sunset Paddle Boat Tour

The sunset boat tour lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and costs 1,200 to 1,800 baht per person. Drinks and snacks included. Departs at 4:30 p.m., returns at 6:30 p.m. Food boats and guide boats follow along.

How Much Are Hotels in Railay?

Railay has hotels at every price level. Cheap beach bungalows from 800 to 1,500 baht per night. Mid-range resorts from 2,500 to 4,500 baht. 5-star luxury hotels from 8,000 to 15,000 baht per night. The price includes breakfast and access to the gym and pool.

For couples, we recommend Rayavadee Resort or Phulay Bay Ritz-Carlton. Both sit on the prettiest beach with private villas and pools. For families, try Sand Sea Resort or Railay Bay Resort at 3,500 to 6,500 baht per night. They have kids' pools and family rooms.

Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead during the high season (November to April). Rooms fill up fast. In the rainy season (May to October), booking 1 week ahead is fine. Rates are 30 to 50 percent cheaper.

Best Months to Visit Railay

The high season runs from November to March. Dry weather, clear water, small waves. Great for swimming and photos. But crowds are big and hotel rates peak.

The best value months are April to May and September to October. Weather is still good, fewer people, and hotels are 20 to 30 percent cheaper. Rain falls 1 to 2 times per week on average.

Avoid late September to early October when tropical storms hit often. Waves get big and boats stop on some days. If you must visit then, book a hotel that lets you stay 2 to 3 days extra in case of weather delays.
