Things to Do at Phi Phi Islands: Snorkel, Kayak, Cliff Climb

18/05/26 - 博客

Phi Phi activities go way beyond Instagram photos. You can dive deep with healthy coral reefs. You can kayak into quiet bays no big boat can reach. You can climb limestone cliffs loved by climbers worldwide, right next to the sea. You can hike to a 360-degree viewpoint. This guide shows the best things to do at Phi Phi with prices and the top spots for each one.

What Makes Phi Phi a Playground for Adventurers?

Phi Phi sits in the middle of the Andaman Sea, 45 kilometers from Krabi town. The islands have it all. Limestone cliffs rise 200 meters. Deep bays hold crystal water. Shallow coral grows near the shore. Deeper reefs ring the outer bays. So you can fill a whole day without moving anywhere else.

Want to get the lay of the land first? Read our Phi Phi Islands guide to see how Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le differ before you plan your activities.

Most travelers miss the best stuff. They rush in for Maya Bay photos and leave. The smart move is to stay 2 nights on Phi Phi Don and pick 4 or 5 activities. You'll get a much fuller trip.

Phi Phi Snorkeling and the Best Dive Sites in Krabi

Phi Phi snorkeling has two main forms. Snorkeling means just a mask and tube. Scuba diving needs a tank and a certificate.

Top Snorkeling Spots

Tonsai Bay is the easiest start. Walk right off the beach into the water. It's 1 to 3 meters deep. You'll see clownfish, butterflyfish, and table coral. Gear rents for 150 to 250 baht a day.

Loh Dalum Bay looks like Tonsai but has fewer people in the morning. Coral spreads out 100 to 200 meters from shore. Watch for hermit crabs and starfish.

Bakao Bay is on the east side of the island. The coral is thicker than at Tonsai. You can spot baby blacktip reef sharks sometimes. Longtail boats take 15 minutes from Tonsai. The fare is 600 to 900 baht per boat.

World-Class Dive Sites

Maya Bay now allows scuba at one spot. Depths run 12 to 18 meters. You might see sea turtles and big grouper. You need PADI Open Water or higher.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang sit 1.5 hours from Phi Phi by boat. Depths run 25 to 30 meters. From February to May, whale sharks visit. Manta rays show up year-round. A 2-dive trip costs 4,500 to 6,500 baht per person.

Anemone Reef is near Phi Phi Le. Depths run 15 to 25 meters. The soft coral comes in many colors. You might see moray eels and lobsters.

Dive Prices

Type Price What You Get
Try Dive (no cert needed) 3,500-4,500 THB 1 dive, max 12 meters
Fun Dive (cert needed) 2,800-3,500 THB 1 dive
2 dives 4,500-5,500 THB 2 dives in one day
Open Water Course 12,000-15,000 THB 3-4 days, get certified

Pick dive shops that are PADI 5-Star Centers or SSI Diamond. Check reviews first. Skip the cheapest options. They often use old gear or untrained guides.

Phi Phi Kayak: The Most Peaceful Activity

Phi Phi kayak trips work great for people who want to slip into small bays where big boats can't go. It's quiet, low-impact, and you get the closest look at the cliffs. No experience needed.

Top Kayak Spots

Maya Bay outer edge lets you paddle near the entrance, even when the bay itself is closed inside. Round trip takes 45 minutes from Tonsai.

Pileh Lagoon is a small bay ringed by cliffs. The water glows emerald. Kayaks can park inside the bay, closer than big boats. It takes about an hour from Phi Phi Don.

Long Beach on the south side of Phi Phi Don is great for paddling along the shore to spot shallow coral. About 30 minutes one way.

Rental and Tour Costs

Hourly rental runs 200 to 300 baht. Daily rental is 800 to 1,200 baht. A guided half-day kayak tour costs 1,200 to 1,800 baht per person and includes gear, a guide, lunch, and a life jacket.

Pick 2-seater kayaks for couples or parent and kid. Singles work better for solo paddlers. Wear your life jacket the whole time. Pack your phone in a waterproof bag.

Phi Phi Cliff Climbing: A Check-In Spot Climbers Worldwide Love

People don't know Phi Phi is great for climbing. The rock quality matches Railay. The only difference is fewer routes total.

Best Climbing Spots

Tonsai Tower is south of Tonsai Bay. It has 15 to 20 routes, grades 5a to 7c. You climb straight from the beach. You see the sea the whole time.

Deep Water Soloing is Phi Phi's signature. You climb sea cliffs with no ropes. Falling into the water is part of the fun. A half-day trip costs 1,500 to 2,500 baht per person.

Gear and Lessons

Beginner classes run 1,200 to 1,800 baht for half a day or 2,500 to 3,500 baht for a full day. That covers gear, a guide, and water. Most instructors speak English.

Experienced climbers can rent gear for 500 to 800 baht a day. You need a cert like CWA or AMGA.

Phi Phi Viewpoint Hike: An Activity You Can't Miss

Phi Phi Viewpoint sits on a hill in the middle of the island. There are 3 levels in a row. Entry is 30 baht per person.

Viewpoint 1 takes 15 to 20 minutes to hike up. You see Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay joining like butterfly wings. Most photos come from here.

Viewpoint 2 needs 10 more minutes. Fewer people. The view is 360 degrees and you can see Phi Phi Le from here.

Viewpoint 3 is 20 to 30 more minutes of hiking. The path slopes and gets slippery in the rains. But you'll catch the best sunset in Krabi.

Tips

Hike before 8:00 to dodge the heat and crowds. Or go at sunset, 17:30 to 18:30. Wear grippy shoes. Bring a liter of water. Pack a waterproof camera.

Read Phi Phi Don vs Phi Phi Le to decide which island to stay on. The viewpoint is only on Phi Phi Don.

Beach Parties and Fire Shows: Phi Phi at Night

After dark, Phi Phi Don turns into a beach bar scene. Loh Dalum Bay is the main spot.

Fire shows happen every night 21:00 to 23:00. Free. Slinky Bar and Stones Bar have the best ones. Performers spin flaming staves and do acrobatics with fire.

Full Moon Parties happen every night actually, but full moon nights and Friday and Saturday nights are the wildest. Drinks cost 200 to 400 baht. No cover charge.

Quiet beach time works too. Small bars on Tonsai Beach are softer. Drinks cost 150 to 250 baht.

Snorkel With Guides Who Actually Know the Clear Spots

At Railay Eco Tour, we run snorkeling trips and Phi Phi tours with guides who grew up in Krabi. Our guides have been diving these waters for 10 to 15 years. They know which spots have the healthiest coral. They know where to find blacktip reef sharks. They know what time of day the water is clearest.

Our full-day Phi Phi Islands tour uses a Luxury Speedboat. It's comfortable and handles waves well. The route covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Bakao Bay, and a walk around Tonsai. Lunch on the boat and snorkel gear come with it.

Got a family that wants to stay on Phi Phi Don for 2 or 3 days with lots of activities? Reach out to our team for a custom trip. We can mix kayak, climbing, scuba, and a morning trip to Maya Bay all in one go. Read our Maya Bay 2026 guide first so you know the new rules.

At Phi Phi — Don't Miss These Activities

Phi Phi activities run wider than most people think. Love the underwater world? Pick snorkeling at Tonsai or scuba at Hin Daeng. Want quiet? Kayak in Pileh Lagoon. Like a challenge? Try climbing at Tonsai Tower or Deep Water Soloing. Love views? Hike the viewpoint at sunset. Like nights out? Hit the fire shows at Loh Dalum.

The best plan is 2 nights on Phi Phi Don. Day one: water activities. Day two: land activities or a trip to Phi Phi Le. Budget around 3,500 to 7,000 baht per person for 2 days, not counting your hotel and the ride from Krabi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need diving experience for Phi Phi?

No. Snorkeling works for anyone who can swim a little. Scuba Try Dives need no cert at all. You learn for 30 minutes with a guide, then dive to a max of 12 meters. Anyone 10 years or older can try.

Is kayaking at Phi Phi safe for beginners?

Yes, if you wear a life jacket and pick calm bays. Tonsai Bay, Loh Dalum Bay, and Pileh Lagoon are beginner-friendly. Skip paddling across to Phi Phi Le alone. The trip takes 1.5 hours and the waves on the way can pick up.

How is climbing at Phi Phi different from Railay?

Railay has way more routes (500-plus vs 50-plus) and more grade variety. But Phi Phi has Deep Water Soloing, where you climb sea cliffs with no rope. You can't really do that at Railay. Pick Railay for regular climbing. Pick Phi Phi to try Deep Water Soloing.

What free activities are there at Phi Phi?

Hiking the viewpoint (only 30 baht entry). Walking around Tonsai Bay. Snorkeling from the beach with your own gear. Watching fire shows at the beach bars. Walking to Long Beach from Tonsai (25 to 30 minutes).

Is Phi Phi safe at night?

Yes, around Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay. Lots of lights and people. Don't walk alone on dark paths to Long Beach or the viewpoint at night. Keep your valuables close. Don't drink anything you left unattended.
