Panyi Floating Fishing Village

Ko Panyi, also known as Koh Panyee, is a self-sufficient fishing village in Phang Nga province built on stilts, with a history dating back to the 18th century when Javanese migrants settled there. Originally constructed on stilts due to land ownership restrictions at the time, it features a mosque, market, and is a popular stop for travelers. The village is famous for its floating football pitch, built by children inspired by the FIFA World Cup, and for producing the successful Panyee FC soccer team.
Today, Ko Panyi hosts over 300 families, totaling around 1,500 residents, and offers walking tours of its narrow walkways, shops selling souvenirs, and recently constructed bungalows for overnight stays. Its economy has shifted from primarily fishing to tourism, with many locals involved in guiding, dining, and hospitality services. The village's origins trace back to a story of a family signaling their settlement by planting a flag, which also gave the island its name, meaning “Flag Island.
